It will have some sort of a hard, smooth coating (finish) to protect the wood. An unfinished fretboard would be a rosewood or ebony fretboard, something where the actual wood is exposed, with no coating (finish) on top of it. Find a Strat or Tele with a maple fretboard, and feel of it, look at it.

That's right....that is the way both my Strat n Tele necks are. Look closely on the back of the headstock and you can see the micro scratches from the steel wool or Scotchbrite.
