They are one of the three different techniques used in Rock art, the prehistoric precursors to art.
Web“Petroglyph” comes from the Greek words, petros for rock, and glyphein to carve. Hawaiians call this form of rock art k’i’i pohaku, or images in stone. Though petroglyphs can be found in at least 100 sites on all the Hawaiian Islands, the largest concentration of these mysterious carvings is on the Big Island of Hawaii.
